Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (NIV) 1 Thessalonians 5:1
Chapter 5 begins to talk about the unexpected coming of the Lord and how a believer should be ready to receive Jesus. As we wait for the coming of the Lord, Paul encourages to put the armor of God and also encourages to build up one another in spiritual life. God has given this ministry to every believer to help another believer to grow. Help to build up one another. This is the way in which everyone of us can grow. When you help another person to grow in the Lord, you will also grow. Encourage others and you will be encouraged. You lift up others, others will lift you up.
No one can lift them up themselves by putting others down through jokes, speaking negative about them, making fun of them, exposing their weakness before others and so on. People who promote themselves at the cost of others will not survive long term. Husbands, do not put down your wife before others. Wife, do not put down your husband before others. Believers, do not put down your pastor or another believer before others. Do not speak negative about your colleagues or boss. Do not put down your friends. Speak positive. See gold in others. Encourage one another. Genuinely love another. Protect the interest of the others. Speak encouraging words to others. Build up others through your actions and words; by doing so, you will also grow.
