Mark 16:20 And they went out and preached
everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by
accompanying signs. (ESV)
1 Corinthians 2:4 and my speech and my message
were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and
of power, (ESV)
1 Thessalonians 1:5 because our gospel came to
you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full
conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.
(ESV)
A common thing that we can notice in all these three verses
is that gospel was accompanied with some visible demonstration of God’s power –
miracles. This is a common pattern of ministry of Jesus and apostles - preaching
of the gospel accompanied by miracles through the Holy Spirit. Witnessing is
more than just passing information. If it does not accompany the work of the
Lord or Holy Spirit work, gospel will remain as information and powerless. Our words
should not be just information but it should be demonstration of the Holy Spirit
and power of God. A Holy Spirit empty and powerless church cannot produce such
gospel preaching. That’s why Acts 1.8 is a foundation for gospel preaching: waiting
upon Lord – receiving Holy Spirit and power – witnessing.
